I received this press release, and though I’d never heard of this restaurant before, I thought I’d throw it out there and see if any of you have tried or are planning to try it.  If you have, please let me know!  I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to new places to eat.

I eat there everytime I go home (Memphis, TN) – and I ate there pre-gluten free. They have good sandwiches, HUGE potatoes, and awesome iced tea.

This is super exciting, another place I can eat on the road!!!

I eat at McAlister’s here in Champaign, Illinois frequently. On their website they do a good job of listing which items have gluten in them and at the resturant if there is ever a question on my end they have brought the container or package out for me to look at the ingredient list. McAlister’s is similar to Jason’s Deli if you are familiar with those, (on a side note: Jason’s is 100xs better!) Jason’s are big in Texas as is Subway so the fact that both of those chains have started serving gluten free bread is making others in the area take note. I just wish both Subway and McAlister’s would try this out in their Illinois stores so that I can enjoy the change! i’m only in Texas once a year to visit my Dad.

I love this place! They are famous for their ice tea, a big hit here in the South. Now with the GF bread, I can have their awesome sandwiches again! They also have great salads and spuds.

I think it is great that you have added GF bread options. However, why only in Texas locations? Why not the TN locations? Wouldn’t it be nice to be the first to start recognizing gluten as a real issue? It would open the eyes to others like Subway to get on board. As you know, 1 in 133 Americans have Celiac. This does not include those with intolerances or sensitivities.

Texas is probably the test market. Subway was the same way. They started with Texas as the first test market, then started adding gluten-free sandwiches at other store (I think Utah may have been next). It is not financially viable to do it in all stores nationwide, for just about any new and different business program.

McAllisters is headquartered in MS but only TX restaurants have Udi’s bread as far as I know. I have asked for it in Olive Branch and Southaven MS-but to no avail-they will offer you sandwich with no bread or wrap as they carry no lettuce leaves-only pre-cut lettuce potatoes are good-but you have to watch servers -they try to switch the gravy for au jus on potatoes -great gravy-but full of gluten-make sure to let your server know of your gluten intolerance or celiac condition and ask for paper under your food when prepared and new gloves-high risk for cross contamination-GREAT iced tea!!!

Hi Crystal, it seems like they are still in the trial stages in Texas. Hopefully people eat there! Oh, I was given a gift card by a fellow teacher – I should go!
