Delightfully Gluten Free (TM)

Betty Lou’s Gluten Free Fruit Bars

Sitting in the back seat of my parents’ minivan on the road to foggy California (sometimes sunny), Braden and I busted out some sweet snacks and the laptop, to take a few notes.

We recently received some Betty Lou’s Gluten Free Fruit Bars from the company.  On first inspection, they look sort of like Fig Newtons, with a cake/cookie outside and fruit filling inside.

Trying the Cherry type first, Braden said it “feels like in-between cake and cookie.  It tastes like a cookie, but less sweet.”
I decided it had an oatmeal cookie taste and feel, with a bit of cinnamon and slight hint of ginger (it was a little hard to identify).  Cherry flavor was very real; it felt like a nice pie.

The Strawberry was Braden’s favorite.  He said it really tastes like strawberry, and the texture is quite thick.
I found it was not sweet like jam, but like a thick all-fruit puree.  It’s almost deceptive, like a true breakfast bar.

Braden thought the Blueberry was initially overpowered by the cookie.  I, however, thought the blueberry filling is much more powerful of a flavor; you can more easily taste the extra flavors in this one, but can’t identify them.

I wish I’d had more of the Apple Cinnamon with me, that I could have given some to my dad.  He LOVES apple pie.  To me, it really did taste like a nice pie.   It had a good amount of cinnamon, which really complements the apple flavor, and would definitely satisfy a pie craving for me.
Braden’s taste buds noticed that it tastes like apple when you first bite into it, and then you really taste the cinnamon more as an aftertaste.

Overall, Braden and I both decided they were very tasty.  My initial impression was that they were like Fig Newtons, but they are really more like if Fig Newtons were made with oatmeal cookies.  The consistency of the cookie part was almost like those no-bake oatmeal cookies (the ones made with peanut butter on the stove).  Excellent.  A great treat, and one that I would be happen to put into Braden’s school lunch boxes, and he would be grateful to receive.

I had one of the apple cinnamon ones over the weekend. I heated it for a couple of seconds in the microwave and topped it with a little df whipped cream. Next time I’ll try it with df ice cream!
