Delightfully Gluten Free (TM)

Fitzee Bar

Most of you probably know by now that I love the convenience of a good cereal/protein/fruit and nut (meal replacement) bar.  There are many days when I really don’t have time for breakfast (but it’s the most important meal!).  I usually eat lunch while doing research, writing a paper, and/or grading papers after teaching a couple of fitness classes.

Protein bars are a kind of important to me.

The newest bar on my scene is the FITzee Bar.  They are certified gluten-free, made with natural ingredients, and are a good source of fiber, calcium, and vitamins A & C.

Currently, there are 3 flavors: Apples ‘N Oats, Chewy Chocolate Chip, and Coconut Almond Chip.  These bars are all moist and chewy and taste like some of our favorite desserts.  Part of the reason that they can remain so moist is they must be refrigerated.  They taste sweet without tasting sugary, and it feels like you’re eating a dessert (which, let’s be real, makes me happy).

The Apples ‘N Oats tastes a whole lot like an apple pie.  Who wouldn’t want to eat that?  There are chunks of apples and lots of cinnamon.

The Chewy Chocolate Chip has a faint taste of oats with a chocolate chip in each bite (that’s if you take small bites).  It reminds me of taking a bunch of moist, chewy chocolate cookies and smashing them together (like all the crumbs and broken pieces).

Reminiscent of an Almond Joy, the Coconut Almond Chip is a less-sweet and definitely healthier version of one of my favorite candies.  Breakfast at my computer that tastes like candy?  Yes, please.
It has a bit of a different mouth feel and is chunkier than the other two because of bits from the almonds and the coconut flakes.

With 15 grams of protein, the FITzee Bar averages 22% protein, 39% fat, and 42% carbohydrates.  The FITzee Bar is specifically formulated with butter for its health benefits.  Extracts from the flyer they provided with the samples:

  • Butter has anti-oxidants that protect against weakening arteries
  • Butter is a very rich source of the vital mineral selenium
  • Saturated fats in butter have strong anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties
  • Butter contains conjugated linoleic acid, which is a potent anti-cancer agent, muscle builder, and immunity booster
  • Butter is your only source of an anti-stiffness factor, which protects against calcification of the joints
  • Butter is a source of quick energy, and is not stored in our body’s adipose tissue

Currently, it seems, they can only be purchased online, but they deliver nationwide (USA) and can arrange local pickup locations.  They are what I would deem pretty pricey, and designed to meet the needs of people who are really working on their health (as opposed to people who don’t really care and just eat protein bars or meal replacement bars because they are quick and cheaper than a meal out).  But if this is something that would work in your budget and is aligned with your current health goals, check them out.  It’s the tastiest breakfast I’ve had in awhile with only 14 grams of sugar.  🙂
