Delightfully Gluten Free (TM)

Vegan Gourmet Shreds

Cheese – the one thing newly diagnosed milk-allergic/lactose intolerant peeps miss most, I hear.  Pizza if you’re vegan?  Forget about it, right?  Not so fast.

I recently received some samples of Vegan Gourmet Shreds from Follow Your Heart (makers of Vegenaise) and I put it to the pizza test.

Vegan Shreds Pizza

This little tortilla pizza is made with a gluten-free flour tortilla (made with half sorghum flour and half cassava flour – not exactly following the recipe), tomatoes and green chilies (can of Ro-Tel), chicken (leftover from a Costco rotisserie chicken), and Vegan Gourmet Shreds Fiesta Blend.

I stuck this little baby in the oven to broil.  The shreds held their shape, and didn’t seem to melt.  They kind of formed a crust because of the broiler.  However, the shreds under the toppings melted beautifully.  The Fiesta Blend was just a little spicy and tasted great.  Unmelted (before going in the oven), it doesn’t quite have the “chew” of cheese, but it doesn’t really taste different.

Martin made himself a few pizzas, too, and used sauce, Shreds, and pepperoni, with the Shreds between the sauce and the pepperoni.  His seemed to melt just fine and he didn’t even notice anything different than regular cheese.  I guess that’s the point, right?

Currently, Follow Your Heart has a $1.00 off coupon available for the Vegan Gourmet Shreds.  Braden’s friend’s father is 100% vegan.  I think I see some pizza in his future…
